Review: Father’s Day

Review

To review a Troma release, as we so frequently do at Beyond the Gore, is something of an oddity in itself. How can you critique a movie from a company whose sole business plan is to be anti-commercial?! Is the acceptance of their movies and to give them high scores actually an insult to their ethos?

Am is seriously overthinking the whole thing?!

Well Father’s Day, the latest Troma release developed by like-minded crazies Astron-6, is well in line with all the latest ‘high standard’ troma horrors. The plot, which I will happily quote from the press release sees “Ahab, a man obsessed with exacting a brutal, violent revenge on the man who murdered his dad, joining John, an eager priest, and Twink, a hot-headed street hustler, on an epic quest to find and defeat this mythical monster known as Chris Fuchman AKA The Father's Day Killer” From this synopsis the plot sounds like something quite run of the mill. The film is most certainly not!

We’ve all heard the phrase, got MILF? Some of you may even make it a habit to track down videos in which people do indeed, get MILF well, Father’s day asks the question “Got DILF?”. Yes, what the plot synopsis doesn’t tell you is that the monster Chris Fuchman (pronounced FUCK-MAN) doesn’t just kill the fathers, he ass rapes them first!

A plot which centres around savage anal, is certainly not something we’ve seen before – except for perhaps ‘Deliverance’! And when you then realise that the “Fuckmanicus” (latin?) is actually a reference to the occult, things just keep getting weirder and weirder. This movie is completely off its tits. In 96 minutes this movie crams in so much bizarre imagery that it is really quite difficult to keep up, and despite the fact that you might be asking your mate WTF? (Particularly in the last 30 minutes) you can’t help but be entertained. Any further effort to critique the plot would be pointless, but rest assured the acting is satisfyingly hammy, the dialogue cheap and cheesy and the girls fit and talentless!

The gore is amazing, as would be expected. There are so many bloody moments that remind you just how gory a movie can be. The effects look really cool, of course not realistic, but so over the top you can’t help laugh out loud. There are plenty of completely gratuitous kill scenes it is amazing that each one makes the impact that it does. Favourites of course include a chainsaw and for sheer brutality, the dismemberment of a wang. Which incidentally looked all too real!

The nudity is hard to score. As you see, our revolutionary rating system, gore/nudity/plot, seems to fit the bill well for Troma movies; it’s almost as if it may have been influenced by them 😉 – but when we score nudity we kind of had in mind female skin. Father’s Day does not discriminate and there are Cocks-a-plenty throughout the movies run time. There are some tits too which are a welcome site, but it has to be said the majority of this movies ‘nudity’ grading is based on bumming, cock sucking and full screen sacs and cracks! If that makes you feel uncomfortable in anyway, you have been warned.

Overall, as with most Troma movies, you know what you are letting yourself in for. Ironically, it is the fact that simply put you never know what you will be getting that is all the fun. Father’s Day has been greeted with open arms by the horror community and rightfully so. It’s bizarre, perhaps to its detriment in the final few scenes which do drag a little, its gory and its full of non-pc imagry which will stay with you for a while. Whilst I would say it quite hits the high standards set by say ‘Poultrygeist’ or ‘Terror Firmer’ it is still a movie which is more than worthy of the Troma tag. Show your support! Get the film, and as with Poultrygeist, don’t pass up on an opportunity to own the limited edition 3 disc version!
