The Devil’s Well marks another notch on the bedpost of paranormal found footage films and sadly whilst it has its moments (even these are questionable) fails to present any new ideas.

Husband and wife paranormal investigation team Bryan and Karla are in Connecticut to unveil the mystery of the Devil’s Well, a so called portal to hell. Make way for the films first stumble, after running low on battery Bryan leaves Karla in the pitch black to grab a new one….what could possibly go wrong? On his return Karla is of course missing and Bryan is taken into custody.

Fast forward a few months and it’s time for a ‘Mockumentary’ style introduction to the main body of the film. This consists of talking head shots, whether it be relatives or so called specialists on the well itself all giving their accounts on the subject. For the most part this is actually done quite well and although it spans between 20-30 minutes at least tries to present some suspense and intrigue for the road ahead.

Supernatural investigation team SIGNS (Supernatural Investigators of the Greater Northeast) take the task of further documentation of the well including Bryan desperate to find some answers about his missing wife. Unfortunately this is where The Devil’s Well presents pretty much all of the found footage clichés we have been exposed to previously. The team setup a number of cameras and prepare for their investigation – it’s all just a bit too familiar.

The location is what you would expect given the subject matter, dark, claustrophobic in parts with the potential of scares around any corner, however don’t worry there aren’t any.

I won’t divulge on the plot anymore as when the cat is out of the bag so to speak the film falls flat on its face, simply put any whiff of the supernatural is extinguished and replaced with what feels like a mere excuse to start dispatching cast members. 

I really can only recommend this to the found footage hardcore, but there are much, much better out there. On the positive acting is overall solid considering the budget, and i did prefer the more stable approach to the POV scenes, there’s not much vomit inducing shaky cam that I can recall. The film as a whole has been shot remarkably well given the lighting conditions it’s just a shame there’s little to no pay off for the 90 minute runtime.
