Review: The Off-Season

Review

I haven’t seen this film for several years, and due to its dire nature I don’t want to see it again. But we promised all films on 'the list' would eventually have a review, so I’ve taken on the duty of trying to remember enough about this film to write a review.

I’ll tell you what I remember about it.

  1. It’s complete and utter shit
  2. It’s got Angus Scrimm of Phantasm fame as the only recognizable actor
  3. It’s full of plot holes
  4. It has the most misleading box art of all time
  5. It’s complete and utter shit, I realise I’ve put this already, but I thought it such an important point it needed to be made twice.

The storyline as far as I can remember is a young couple visit a summer resort during the quiet off season in order to give the man a chance to write his novel or something in peace. Crazy shit starts to happen, including a story arc which sees their hotel bed bleeding, when they complain to the management they’re told that a woman was killed in their room, they’re given a new mattress and that’s the end of the problem.

Seriously, that’s how easy it is to get rid of spirits, a little bit of redecorating. It’s like getting a loft conversion to cleanse the house.

A little side note about the DVD cover art. The cover shows a hand bursting free of a grave in a graveyard. There are no zombies or graveyards in this film. Whilst trying to refresh my memory about this wank I went on Wikipedia to see if the film had an entry, it does. All it is, is explaining the mistake with the box art, apparently the distributors slapped that on, much to the director’s annoyance.

The director seems to think that the people who have seen the movie based on the art will hate it, and that the people who would enjoy it won’t watch it because they won’t buy it based on the art. I agree with the first part, but I can’t imagine anyone enjoying this film.

In conclusion, don’t watch this film; its shit.
